Сюжет

Act 1 

The story is set in 9th century pagan Russia. At the court of Svetozar, the Prince of Kiev, his daughter Lyudmila is about to marry the knight Ruslan.

The two fellow-suitors who have been rejected, the boastful warrior Farlaf and the oriental poet Ratmir, are jealous. In a song, the Bard Kayan first predicts that the couple will not have a happy future, but then declares that true love will finally triumph over every obstacle.

Lyudmila is sad because she is leaving her father. Svetozar comforts her and gives the betrothed couple his blessing. Suddenly it is dark and a storm breaks with thunder and lightning. While everyone appears to be under some magic spell, Lyudmila is kidnapped.

Svetozar promises half his kingdom and the hand of his daughter to the man who brings Lyudmila back. Ruslan, Ratmir and Farlaf go in search of her.

Act 2

Kuslan enters the cave of the old wizard Finn, who tells him that Lyudmila has heen taken away by the evil dwarf Chernomor. Finn then tells the sad tale of his love for the once beautiful, but wicked Naina. He warns Kuslan about Naina's evil spells.

Farlaf meets the witch Naina and she offers him her help in finding Lyudmila and defeating Kuslan.

Ruslan comes upon an abandoned battlefield. Here, he encounters the head of the Giant, the brother of the dwarf Chernomor. Ruslan pierces the head with his spear and finds the magic sword with which he can defeat Chernomor.

Act 3

The enchanted palace of Naina, with her maidens singing and dancing seductively. Gorislava, Ratmir’s rejected sweetheart, is kept Naina's prisoner. When Ratmir and Ruslan enter the enchanted palace they are seduced by the singing and dancing. But the old wizard Finn appears on the scene and breaks the spell. Ratmir rediscovers in Gorislava his true love.

Act 4

The magic gardens of Chernomor. The kidnapped Lyudmila mourns her fate as the dwarf's prisoner. Chernomor organizes oriental dancing to amuse her. Ruslan appears with the magic sword.

After Chernomor’s spell, that cast Lyudmila into a deep sleep, he and Ruslan leave and meet outside in combat.
Ruslan defeats Chernomor by using the magic sword to cut off Chernomor’s beard, which contains all his magic power.

To his great sorrow, Ruslan is unable to awaken Lyudmila. In the company of Ratmir and Gorislava, he sets off with the sleeping Lyudmila for Kiev.

Act 5

Ratmir, standing guard one night during the journey back to Kiev, sings of his rediscovered love for Gorislava. He hears that Lyudmila has been kidnapped again, this time by Farlaf, aided by the witch Naina. Ratmir is filled with despair, but is given a magic ring by the wizard Finn and advised to follow Ruslan to Kiev and give him the ring.

Farlaf has taken the sleeping Lyudmila to Svetozar and demanded the reward. But no one can awaken her. Ruslan enters with the ring and awakens Lyudmila from her sleep. All are celebrating, praising Ruslan, Lyudmila, the Gods and Mother Russia.
