TEN FREESTYLE TIPS

All the principles of efficient swimming outlined in Chapter 6 apply to the crawl stroke. Try to keep them in mind as you practice the stroke. In addition, the following ten tips will make learning the freestyle much easier.
 1. Streamline your body.
 2. Your arms provide most of the propulsion in the freestyle, so use an elongated S-shaped pull, the most efficient pattern there is.
 3. Let your arm enter the water “quietly,” fingertips first, elbow bent. Try to avoid slapping the water.
 4. Keep your elbow high throughout the pull. This will enable you to exert the maximum amount of power.
 5. Accelerate your arm throughout the pull.
 6. Recover with a bent arm, elbow pointing straight up. Do not use a straight-arm recovery.
 7. Roll your body at least forty-five degrees with every stroke you take. Doing so will increase your power and efficiency.
 8. Avoid the mistake of breathing too early. Roll your head to inhale only after you see the opposite hand enter the water. Return your face to the water in time to see the recovering hand enter.
 9. Learn to inhale on both sides. When practicing, try to breathe every third stroke.
10. Whether you use a two- or six-beat flutter kick, maintain a strong, steady rhythm.
