Swimming makes sense—for you, for me, for just about everyone. Study after scientific study documents its beneficial effects on the body and the mind. Not only is swimming the best form of exercise, but it is a sensual and highly enjoyable activity as well. By the time you finish this book, I hope you will be convinced to get in the swim. To help you see how much swimming can mean to your health, three score sheets for the life-expectancy test are included in Appendix C, in addition to the one on this page. Take the test and fill in a score sheet before you begin your swimming program. Be honest with yourself: this is serious business. Then take the test after just six months of swimming, and again after one year. This way you will be able to chart for yourself the extraordinary benefits you’ll be deriving—how swimming will be your gift of life.
The Fountain of Youth exists. And unlike the unfortunate JuanPonce de León, you won’t have to voyage halfway around the world to find it. It exists right in your own community—at the local pool, in a nearby lake, in the ocean. You won’t need to brave the unknown dangers of uncharted lands. All you will need is a swimsuit, goggles, and a little motivation. Swimming will add years to your life—and life to your years.
