THE BUTTERFLY IS perhaps the most spectacular swimming stroke—powerful, dramatic, graceful, sinuous, and very fast. In fact, although the butterfly almost certainly will never surpass the freestyle in speed, the current world records for the stroke are about as fast as the freestyle records were only twenty-five years ago.
The fly, as it is popularly known, is swum with an undulating body movement. Both arms are brought forward together over the water, then brought back simultaneously and symmetrically. For every arm stroke, there are two kicks, with the legs moving up and down simultaneously in the dolphin kick.
