SWIMMING FOR FITNESS

As previously noted, swimming provides most of the aerobic benefits running does. Tests have shown that swimmers can get their heart rates up almost as high as comparably fit runners’. What’s more important, however, is that the sport is virtually injury free. Because water provides so much natural buoyancy, exercise in water is easy on the joints and tendons. You can work out as aggressively as you like without concern that you will be disabled by aching feet, blisters, shinsplints, tennis elbow, or runner’s knee. Even more assuring, you can have confidence that your zeal for the sport is not condemning you to a future plagued by a variety of knee, leg, hip, or back ailments. In fact, if you have developed any of these problems from your other activities, swimming may help make them better.
Not only does swimming provide aerobic benefits but because it takes place in water, a medium in which you must push against resistance to propel yourself forward, it confers many of the benefits of resistance exercises like Nautilus workouts and weight lifting.
