PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

As mentioned earlier, even more than in the other strokes, the key to a fluid, efficient breaststroke is rhythm—the correct timing of the arms, legs, and breathing. When you’ve got the rhythm, each phase of the stroke will move in glorious synchronicity with every other phase. If you do not have the rhythm, the stroke will seem awkward and feel herky-jerky.
I believe the easiest way to learn the breaststroke is to take it in the following order:
1. Learn the whip kick.
2. Learn the arm stroke.
3. Learn the timing of the breathing.

When you are comfortable with each of these skills, you are ready to put it all together. The proper timing of the breaststroke is illustrated in the drawings in Figure 9.8.
