OTHER FEMALE CANCERS

Breast cancer is not the only form of this deadly scourge that can be prevented by swimming. Research at the Harvard School of Public Health showed that women who remained physically active throughout their lives were two and a half times less susceptible to cervical and other cancers of the reproductive system.
Again body fat seems to be a triggering factor. “These women were leaner in every age-group than sedentary women,” notes Dr. Frisch, who also directed this study. “Because body fat makes estrogen, leaner women make less estrogen, and of a less potent kind.” As with malignant breast cells, estrogen triggers cell division in the cervix, creating a greater opportunity for abnormal change. According to Dr. Frisch, aerobic activities such as swimming will burn off body fat, keep you lean and trim, and help protect you against these cancers. She recommends swimming at least thirty minutes three days a week.
