GETTING OLDER, GETTING BETTER

The last several decades have become a new age for aging. On the one hand, scientists have begun seriously to probe the mysteries of the aging process. On the other, Masters athletes—particularly swimmers—have challenged socially accepted notions of aging by first testing, then stretching, and then exceeding virtually all the limitations associated with aging. The result is that a new consensus about aging is in the making.
We now know that it is indeed possible to remain physically, mentally, and sexually vigorous throughout middle age and well into the seventies, eighties, and even beyond. We know it because so many people do it. In fact, not only is it possible but I believe it should be considered normal. The key to having a healthy, vital, productive, and long second half century of life is a sound exercise program, such as swimming so consistently provides. This is true in youth, in early adulthood, in middle age, and especially in the later years.
